I have been interested in home automation since one of my friend installed a complete home automation system in his home some years ago. It was amazing to see: everything was automated, you could control the curtains, see the temperature in every room, adjust the heating … all from a central interface. But there were several things I didn’t like about that installation.

How I Discovered Arduino and the World of Open-Source Hardware
In 2009, I discovered the open-source hardware movement and the Arduino platform, and it totally changed the game. Open-source hardware is the idea to build hardware systems and then to share the designs of these systems, like you would share the source code of an open-source software. This movement allowed people to share their designs so that other people of the community could use them and modify them.
At the heart of this movement, the Arduino platform was born: it is a software and hardware environment that allows rapid prototyping of small electronic circuits controlled by a microcontroller. And this changed everything for home automation.

I used my first Arduino board in 2009, and I quickly understood that it was a great opportunity to build my own home automation systems. I started experimenting with the Arduino environment and various sensors, and I acquired a good experience in the domain.
